This book is about two missionaries from Minnesota Steve and Liz Bailey who are sent to a remote village in Northern Alaska. This book is all about adventure, survival, kindness, and over all faith in Northern Alaska. In this book young missionary Steve Bailey and his wife Liz Bailey journey to Northern Alaska in the year of 1950. But when their contact Peter, is injured in a plane accident and at a hospital in afar away village they have no way to preach to the Eskimos. They meet a young Eskimo named Victor who speaks broken English and tries to help translate to the other Eskimos. Victor helps Steve buy some dogs and teaches him to dog sled, and all so helps him by an old abandoned cabin.

I thought this book was okay but not my favorite book, it was an easy read. I recommend this book for children 9-12 who love adventure, survival and the sport of dog sledding.

Touching Spirit Bear                              HarperCollins Children’s Books, 2001, 241 pp., $5.99 Ben Mikaelsen                                                                                               ISBN 0-380-80560-X

Cole Mathews, a seventeen year old, is an extremely coercive and lawless youth with a rough background in this story of revulsion, exoneration, and last but certainly not least survival. Cole has been in trouble with the law since he was seven. His last crime was beating the love of Pete out of Peter Driscal, a ninth grader that Cole had picked on many a time before. He would have gone to prison, if a parole officer hadn’t told him about Circle Justice. He agreed to stay on a remote island around Ketchikan for a year, but shortly after he arrived he picked a fight with a spirit bear and lost dreadfully.

My favorite part of this book is when Cole threw away the fur from the spirit bear. I can barely imagine how hard it must have been difficult for him to give up his only proof that he was telling the complete and honest truth (which was a first). And my favorite character is Garvey, the parole officer. This is because he is very forgiving, fortunately for Cole.

I especially enjoy this book because as I read I remember that this is a true story, and I urge anyone older than 10 years to read this breathtaking novel.

“‛Gaff me in the shoulder blade, cried Tor!’ It was almost too horrible to imagine, but maybe he was right and it was his only chance of getting back on board.”
Robbie Daniels is living in a bay in southeast Alaska. He is leaving in the summer to work as a deckhand. He gets hired by a peculiar man with a dark secret named Tor Torsen. When Robbie finds out the secret he doesn’t know if he will be safe. Together they face the thrill of catching kings and the danger of stormy seas. Robbie’s courage and determination will be put to the ultimate test.
I enjoyed reading “Leaving Protection,” because as an Alaskan I could connect to the book and what it would have been like out their. Will Hobbs has created a great book about adventure, survival, and living your dreams. It is a fast paced story that never was boring. I experienced the storm they encountered. I felt like I was in Robbie’s place riding the enormous waves that crashed over the boat. The book created a big picture in my mind of what the storm would have been like. I recommend this book to people who live life on the edge.
